FAQ

If you are interested in one of our cockapoos, we encourage you to prepare for one of the best friends you'll ever have!  Read about cockapoos, dog care, and training, and then put it to good use!  Owning a cockapoo is extremely rewarding, and I want to be here to help you in your selection.  I have listed some of the most common questions and answers below.  Be sure to ask me if you have any further questions!  And happy puppy hunting to you!

1. Purchasing a Pokagon Cockapoo?

Our puppies are ready to go home at 8 - 9 wks. of age.

We can take a deposit to hold the puppy of your choice for you until the puppy is ready to go home. The deposit is $250 and goes towards the purchase price of the puppy.

The balance owed on the puppy must be paid when you pick the puppy up. Each puppy has a paypal button below it's listing so that you can put a deposit on the puppy to secure your choice. (Deposits are non refundable because it is a promise on your part that you are coming to get your new pup, and a promise on my part that I am holding the pup of your choice for you.)

If you are getting the puppy shipped to you the shipping cost is $350 extra. We ship from Fort Wayne, Indiana usually on Thursdays or Fridays. The only shipping problems we encounter is the rare change of plans due to weather.

2. Ready to go home?  Spay/neuter?

Puppies can go home between the ages of 8 to 9 wks. and 10 wks.  You will need to contact me in advance to set the time of pickup, or shipping, so that I can plan ahead.   If you want me to hold your puppy longer I will have to add a daily fee to your purchase price.  You will need to consult with your vet about the proper time to have your puppy spayed or neutered.

3. Drop ins?

You must make an appointment with me to see my puppies.   I never take drop ins.   However, I am very flexable with my time, and can generally schedule an appointment any time, and on only an hour's notice.

If you must cancel an appointment, please call as soon as possible.  I will not bark or bite...I promise!  So please respect my time.  Thanks.

4. Tail docking? Dew claw removal?

The cockapoo can have a docked tail, or a natural length tail. My preference is a natural length tail. However, if you want your puppy to have a docked tail, just let me know before the puppy is one week of age, and we can get it done for you. If you want one of our older pups, but want a docked tail, then you will need to get it docked when you get the puppy spayed, or neutered. Dew claws may or may not be removed. Again, this is available if requested ahead of time.

5. Potty trained?

Potty training is best done after they go to their new home where you can introduce them to their routine on a one to one basis.  However, many of our clients comment that the puppy is already potty trained when they take them home.  I feel that this is due to the combination of the good early introduction we give them, good instincts on the part of the puppy, and a new owner that is willing to be consistent with outside potty breaks.  The best advice I can give is to make sure your new puppy is always confined to a small area, unless they are outside, or being held; until they are totally reliable.  Introduce indoor freedom slowly, and on a non carpeted surface.  This is best accomplished over the course of several weeks to avoid set backs.

6. First days at home?  Schedule?

Make sure your cockapoo puppy is eating and drinking well within 4 hrs. of coming home.  Give some nutri-cal 2 - 3 times per day.  If your puppy is not eating well you will need to offer a high quality canned food.  Food and water should be availble 24 hrs. a day within the first 3 days, after that you can put puppy on a routine of 4 feedings per day as long as he is eating enough.

When your puppy first goes home you will need to make sure that he feels secure.  The way to do this is to make sure you set aside time to hold the puppy, and that the puppy is warm and comfortable.  This is easily accomplished even if you are traveling or have to leave to go to work.  Make sure you have monitored tempurature where the puppy will be spending time alone. It should be above 69 degrees, and without drafts if the puppy is under 12 wks., or very small.

7. Collar? Harness? Leash?

Usually an adjustable collar that is size 6 - 10" will fit our 8wk. old puppies.  It needs to be snug enough to only allow your finger to slip easily under the collar.  (I am not a fan of a harness unless you have a child that may randomly jerk on the leash.)  Let them wear it when you are holding them, and take it off if they scratch at it a lot.  You can introduce it slowly and they will learn it is ok.  A leash can be used right away, but don't expect to lead your puppy at first.  Don't pull on the leash; let your puppy lead until he gets used to the leash.

8. Vet appointment?  What is needed?

Make a vet appointment for your puppy within the first 2 days if possible so that your vet can check your new puppy, start a new file, and set up a future care plan.  You will need to give your vet the paperwork from our vet, and make sure that they make a proper note of what has already been done.  Most vets require 3 puppy shots within the first 4 months of the puppies' life.  Check with your vet about rabies shot requirements in your state, and spay or neuter times.

9. Our buisness?

Our dogs must have health clearances including patella checks, as well as up to date shots.  Our dogs must have great temperaments.  We take into consideration many factors when making a mating selection, and consult each dog's pedigree.  If there is no reasonable match for a particular dog within our breeding program at any time we will retire that dog, or wait.  We do not over breed our dogs, nor do we inbreed, or breed dogs that have an inheritable defect for any reason.  This means that we must make hard decisions sometimes that are financial setbacks for us, but it is the right thing to do to insure that our clients receive a puppy that will be sound in health and temperament.

We do not allow tours. Our property is private property. I do understand a person being concerned about how our dogs are kept. We have kennel buildings, and large partially covered runs for the adult dogs because cockapoos like to be active when they are outside. They do not have to run or stand on concrete, but have natural surfaces for outdoor runs to ensure health and comfort. The new mommas and puppies are kept in a neonatal unit. As the puppies grow they are introduced to larger areas where they can learn paper training, and then they start going out to puppy runs for potty breaks after their puppy shots have taken affect.

Our dogs are fed high quality food, and supplemented with home cooked meals. They are socialized by me, and are groomed and wormed on a regular basis. We do not put our dogs in cages during the day unless they are a mom with very young puppies. We make sure our dogs are happy and get along well together and with our people family.

10. Cockapoo size?

Our puppies can grow to be any where from about 5 - 25 lbs.   This would not be the range within one litter.  Each litter has a different range depending on the size of the puppies' parents, grandparents, and each particular puppies growth rate, and conception date.  All of these are factors that an experienced breeder such as myself takes into consideration, and still I may be off by a couple of pounds.  Does size really matter?  Not very much.   Some people may want a very tiny cockapoo for a lap dog, but any size cockapoo makes a good lap dog.  Some people may want a larger puppy so that the puppy will not be fragile.  However, we do not generally see fragile cockapoos even in the very small ones.

11. Paperwork? Registration?

It is required by law that a dog is registered at your state humane society, and has an up to date rabies shot in most places.  You can verify this by calling the vet and humane society in your area and ask them when you will need to get this done.   Some resident or pet facilities will require an up to date shot record.  You can call them to find out their policies if your pet will be frequenting such establishments.  Our puppies come with up to date shots according to Indiana law.  You can also request from us a cockapoo registration with the ACC for your puppy at the time of deposit or final payment, whichever comes first.  Club registration (ie ACC or AKC) is not a requirement for any breed of dog, but some people like to register their pet anyway.  All of our breeding dogs are registered with the ACC, and some with the AKC.  Cockapoo puppies can be registered with the ACC (American Cockapoo Club) for a small fee if you desire it.

12. Price of puppies?

We generally ask $700 to $1250 for our puppies.  Sometimes we put a lower price on a puppy that may be a less popular color, or is getting older.  Sometimes we will post lower prices if we have more than one or two litters at a time.   We have noticed that breeders in the extreme north, south, east or west USA may ask more for their puppies because of the demand where they live.  Some people wonder why they are so much, and some wonder why they are so inexpensive, it all depends on your perspective.  We must ask a certain amount to break even.  I cannot speak for anyone else that may have puppies for sale, but dog breeding is not a very profitable business for us.  We do sacrifice quite a bit at times for the wellbeing of our dogs, without adequate compensation.

13. Holds?

If we have not received a deposit, your puppy is not on hold!  We may put a pending hold on a puppy for an agreed upon amount of time so that you can send the deposit through the mail, or through paypal.  If you are mailing the deposit, you can send a personal check as long as you are scheduling a pickup date for more than two weeks from the date the deposit was sent.  Otherwise it needs to be a postal money order.   You must get a tracking number for any money sent through the mail, and give it to us in time, so that we can put your puppy on a true hold for you.  Communication with me is the key.  I am usually available to answer my phone, 260-316-0216, or return your call very quickly.

When a puppy is on hold for a person, that puppy will not be sold to any one else.  The only exception for this is if the person the puppy is on hold for lets me know they do not want the puppy after all, or if they have not made an appointment to pick the puppy up, or have it shipped by the time the puppy is 7wks. old.  (For more about shipping see number 18)

When a puppy is put on hold the deposit money is not refundable unless the puppy is discovered to have a serious defect.  In that case there is an option to the purchaser to move the deposit to another puppy.  If you decide you want to move the deposit to another puppy for any other reason, there will be a $50 fee.

14. Picking up puppy?

You will need to bring a small carry crate, a towel, collar, leash, and wet wipes for any spills or accidents.  You will get a care pac for Royal Canin puppy food, (or new improved brand because we are exploring options for better quality food.)  Our puppies are fed Royal Canin or a new puppy food. (Please just ask until I have announced a permanent change.)   Try to make sure that you are prepared at home, too, with a small inside area for the puppy to be able to play and run around a bit without being able to access the carpet or rugs.  You will need to put down puppy pads in their little area for any accidents.  This will not make it harder to teach them to go out since they naturally prefer to go outside once they experience the joy of ouside potty breaks!

15. Final payment?

If you are picking your puppy up, you will need to bring cash for final payment.   Note - plan ahead - some banks have a limit on the amount they will release on a daily basis.

If you are getting your puppy shipped to you, final payment needs to be in by the time the puppy is 7 wks.

16. Surprise gift?

I am sorry, but that is not ethical.  It is truly a disservice to the puppy, and I will not sell a puppy for a surprise gift.  That being said, if you want one for a gift for a member of your household, that is fine as long as you are prepared to care for the puppy.  If you are surprising your child, please just let me know so I do not call and ruin the surprise accidentally!

17. Hair?  Grooming?

Some cockapoos have curly hair, some wavy, and some only very slightly wavy.  All of them will need to have regular grooming as recomended by your groomer since they do not loose their coat through shedding.   Some of my puppies do not get their full adult coat until they are almost two years old.  Even the very slow growing hair should fill out beautifully as the puppy matures.  Cockapoos are light shed to no shed.  Most of them will go through a puppy shed at some point in the first year.  This is a poodle trait, and does not mean that there will be shedding of the coat as an adult.  Some of my most beautiful non shed cockapoos started out with strait and shorter hair, but I knew they would be lovely as adults because I knew I had bred them right, they were just slow bloomers!

18.  Shipping?

We do ship for usually about $350 - $400 extra.  Shipping includes an extra vet check, and shipping crate, gas expense, and of course the flight ticket.  If the puppy is shipped, we will need final payment two weeks before shipping. Puppy will generally not ship unti he is 9 wks., so final payment would be due in that case at 7 wks of age. A delay in final payment may result in a delay in shipping.

Our shipping crate size is approx. 16"Wx24"Lx14"H. We are currently using crates by Remington which are pretty roomy, and we are using screws to hold them together.  I generally try to put the packet of plastic closers in your pack so you can switch the screws out for the manufactured closers if you wish. If the packet of closers don't make the trip with the puppy then they were taken out somewhere, and the Remington company should be able to replace those for you for free.

19.  Allergies?

There are different degrees of allergies, and different types.  In general, we have found that our clients do not have allergic reactions to our cockapoos whether they are non-shed, or low shed, and no matter if they are f1, f2, or f1b.   But of course we cannot predict reactions on a case to case basis.  In the case of extreme allergies, even the dust and pollen from the air, carried in on the coat can cause a problem.

20.  Temperament?  Temperament testing?

Studies have shown that it is important to gradually introduce stimulation, and varied situations to a puppy as they grow.  We do this in various ways to insure proper intellegence developement, as well as bonding preparation.  We want the puppy to bond with their new family quickly, and many times we see this beginning immediately when the puppy is picked up.  They can sense the intentions of their new family members, and it is rewarding to me to see this bond occuring.

I do not believe that any puppy is impossible to integrate into a human/dog relationship, however, I do feel that some are easier than others.  We have found that a properly prepared cockapoo pup is one of the best that you can get for this unique relationship.  Between the ages of 8 to 10 wks. is optimal for this to occur without having to take into consideration the temperament of the puppy because at this age they are extremely adaptable to the new families' style.

If you want to adopt a puppy over the age of 10 wks., the temperament of the puppy needs to be considered, but is not self limiting.  Remember that the cockapoo breed was bred specifically for companionship, and this is where they excell, even if they have to change to adapt to your desires.  They will joyfully and lovingly adapt to your lifestyle as long as they are met with the same joy and love that they are so willing to give to you!
